Heat Pump + Propane Furnace: How Dual Fuel Works in Ontario

A heat pump and propane furnace can share the job of heating your home. The heat pump supplies electric heating and summer cooling, while the furnace remains available for alternate heat.

How the equipment works together

In a ducted system, an indoor heat-pump coil exchanges heat with air moved by the furnace blower. The outdoor unit transfers heat between the home and outside air. During cooling, the system removes indoor heat; during heating, it moves heat indoors. The coil, outdoor unit and furnace must form a compatible system.

Automatic changeover should suit your home

Proper controls switch between heat-pump and furnace operation according to the system configuration. The changeover setting should reflect heating capacity, comfort needs and operating costs. A fixed temperature copied from another installation may not suit your home or equipment. Ask how the selected controls handle alternate heat and how those settings will be explained at handover.

Why propane homes consider dual fuel

A heat pump gives a propane-heated home another heating source and can reduce the amount of propane used. That does not establish a dollar saving: delivered propane prices, electricity charges, seasonal weather and heat-pump performance all matter. Comparing your actual bills is more useful than relying on a broad savings percentage.

What an installation assessment should cover

The assessment should consider the home’s heat loss, furnace condition, available airflow, ductwork, electrical supply and outdoor placement. Selecting a larger heat pump without checking these items is not a substitute for system design. Commissioning should confirm heating and cooling operation, controls and airflow, followed by an explanation of filter care and normal operation.
